🍇 Gerry Ryan
Businessman Gerry Ryan’s Nagambie connection includes investment in Mitchelton Wines and the brewery and distillery opened on the lakefront in 2019. Those projects added accommodation, food and drink experiences to an area already associated with vineyards and waterways. His wider interests include Jayco caravans and substantial support for professional and developing athletes, particularly in cycling. The local contribution is a working business and tourism connection, with ventures that created jobs and places for visitors to spend time. It is one regional expression of a much broader entrepreneurial and sporting career.
📐 Robin Boyd and Ted Ashton
Robin Boyd prepared the initial plans for Mitchelton’s winery, cellar door and tower near Nagambie. After his death in 1971, architect Ted Ashton completed the design, with the estate opening in 1974. The fifty-five-metre tower became a distinctive feature of the local landscape, rising above a property otherwise shaped by vines and the Goulburn River. Their connection is the architectural commission and the buildings it produced. Remembering both designers also avoids crediting a single famous name with work carried through by another architect. Here the local wine story includes a substantial piece of Australian design history.
🍇 Eric Purbrick
Eric Purbrick took over management of Chateau Tahbilk near Nagambie in 1931, determined to restore a neglected winery’s fortunes. Trained in history and law, he learned winemaking, built distribution networks and promoted wines that began winning awards. He became sole owner in 1934. Shiraz and Marsanne came to be closely associated with Tahbilk, and he helped popularise naming wines by grape variety. His son and grandson later took leading roles in the business. Purbrick’s ashes were scattered among the original 1860 Shiraz vines, an enduring connection with the vineyard he had spent decades reviving.
